Fine Art Landscapes and Seascapes
Stephen Reid is an emerging Cape Breton painter with a
growing reputation as a modern realist. Born in outport
Newfoundland in the 60's with the seaside and
wilderness as a natural playground, Stephen found his
way back home to the east coast after many years
living away. He currently calls Sydney Mines home
and enjoys being near the Atlantic ocean again.
Retiring from business a number of years ago, Stephen
began to rediscover sketching and artistic creativity
that had long ago been a childhood passion. Beginning
with watercolors and ink images, Reid quickly
found his voice in oils and acrylics and has developed
a style that reflects his downeast culture in intimate
detail. In addition to stunning seascapes, spectacular
woodland vistas are a favourite subject matter for this
contemporary painter with an eye for movement and light.
Constantly inspired by the breathtaking scenery and
culture of Cape Breton, Stephen and wife Sherry love
exploring this wonderful place with camera and
sketchpad in hand. From the majestic highlands to the
rugged coast ‘ we love taking the road less travelled’
says the artist of their frequent road trips around the island.
Reid's work is currently on display in Baddeck at the
Victoria County Gallery and Studio
where he has created a series of 8X10 paintings
reflecting the maritime culture and spectacular scenery
of the area.
Each work typically starts out as an idea that gets flushed out in the sketch pad. After color-blocking in acrylics, I spend many hours bringing each piece to life... by adding stunning detail.
